IN THE RED AND BROWN WATER
In the Red and Brown Water
by Tarell Alvin McCraney
This masterful piece is rooted deeply in both Yoruba culture and practice and the modern dynamics of bayou life in Louisiana. In representing cultures beyond the lived experiences of the cast and production team, the process for the development of this show was wholly collaborative and dramaturgy-centered. The cast and creative team collaborated extensively to personalize their own costumes and design the neighborhood in which the play would occur. The approach resulted in a production in which the audience was positioned on their own respective "porches" as to be invited into the community where the events of the play transpire.
